Volunteer - Sasha - United States 2025

Where to begin.. the little world Sarah has created in the middle of the cloud forest with the nearest large city hours away, and neighbors far enough apart to not hear any human noise other than your own, its wonderful. For me it felt like a home away from home. Nelly (the cook) is a wonderful lady with great humor. She and Pasquala (farm hand) are always bickering as they are childhood friends, and it is so lighthearted and entertaining to watch. Here they speak both Spanish and Quechua which is quite interesting to hear. Nellys food is amazing and every day it is different! so much variety as well and almost everything is made completely from scratch.

Sarahs garden is filled with the widest variety of produce i've seen on any farm before. She does a wonderful job at growing and taking care of things, animals as well! She has 7 cats and 2 dogs and loves them all very much. It was always so nice to watch how fondly she greeted them. And she has social media for them too! Every day on the farm is new, different work. I was always learning new things and having new experiences! I learned about seed collecting, the compost process, local plants and wildlife, butterfly gardens, cooking, preserving, making things from scratch. On the weekends we explored and there was a lot to see! Each weekend we visited a waterfall or two, the hike up was beautiful and we even got to swim under the waterfalls! Even on the weekdays we had lots of free time and the river is only walking distance away. We found a little stream that led down into the river and even though the water was cold, it was so lovely to bathe in. I tried to go as often as possible and the walk must have been only around a half an hour or less. Sarah is very flexible with the work and often asks what kind of work we wanted to do or focus on. Sometimes she would give us options and often was open to suggestions. We were even presented with many opportunities to just focus on art. If we wanted to take hours off work on a certain weekday, we could just accumulate them onto another day. It really was so chill and a wonderful volunteer opportunity for me, especially for my first one. I really got to know the other volunteers there and we had an amazing time together. There were so many opportunities and so much time for us to connect. Sarah is really the heart of this whole opportunity and it wouldn't have been so wonderful without her leading it. Even through tough times she remained understanding and thoughtful. She is a very beautiful soul and I can't wait to go back to visit some day!
