Origins & Botanical Identity

Ricinus communis — the plant the world knows as the castor bean — is one of the most paradoxical living things on earth. It is simultaneously one of the oldest medicines in recorded human history and the source of one of the most lethal naturally occurring substances known to science. It has lit the lamps of the Pharaohs and lubricated the engines of World War I aircraft. It has been called the Palm of Christ and has been used in assassination. It heals inflammation, moves lymph, purges the bowels, softens skin, grows hair, and in its unprocessed seed form, in sufficient quantity, it kills.

No other plant in this series holds this duality so completely. And no other plant in this series forces us to confront what has always been true about plant medicine: the line between healer and poison is not a moral line but a chemical one, drawn by dose, preparation, and the intelligence of those who have worked with the plant long enough to know the difference.


Ricinus communis is the sole species in its genus, a member of the Euphorbiaceae family — a clan that includes rubber trees and poinsettias — and it grows with spectacular ambition, reaching up to twelve meters in the wild, with enormous palmate leaves that can span a meter across, and extraordinary seed pods covered in soft red spines that burst open to release seeds marked with intricate patterns of brown and cream, looking so precisely like the engorged body of a tick that the genus name Ricinus derives directly from the Latin for tick. The seeds were named for what they resembled. The plant was feared and revered in equal measure long before anyone understood why.


In Spanish the plant is ricino, though in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and across parts of the Caribbean and Latin America it is called higuerilla, and in Mexico palma de Cristo — a name that echoes its European spiritual designation. In Tamil it is amanakku. In Hindi it is arandi. In Swahili, mbono. In Yoruba, lara. In Arabic, khirwa. In Sanskrit — where it enters medical literature as one of the most important therapeutic plants in the pharmacopeia — it is eranda, a word that appears in the oldest Ayurvedic texts with a frequency and specificity that speaks to how deeply this plant was understood.


A History Older Than the Pharaohs

Traces of wax containing ricinoleic acid — the primary fatty acid of castor oil — have been identified at the Border Cave archaeological site in South Africa, in deposits dating to approximately 24,000 years ago. This is not cultivation. It is evidence of contact: of human hands working with this plant at a time when the world's oldest surviving art was being created on stone walls. Castor beans have been present at the edge of human experience for longer than agriculture itself.

The first evidence of deliberate cultivation comes from northeastern Africa — present-day Ethiopia and Somalia are the most likely points of origin, with the plant spreading rapidly across the continent and north into Egypt before 4000 BCE. Egyptian tombs dated to this period contain castor seeds, including, remarkably, those of Tutankhamun, placed among his burial goods as objects of illumination and renewal. The symbolism was precise: castor oil burned in lamps to light the passage into the afterlife, and perhaps to light the way back.


The Ebers Papyrus — the same ancient Egyptian medical document that records hibiscus for kidney health — describes castor oil under multiple applications dating to approximately 1550 BCE: as a laxative, as a treatment for abscess and scalp conditions, and as a protective agent for the eyes. Herodotus, traveling through Egypt in the fifth century BCE, observed the Egyptians pressing castor oil from the plant they called kiki, noting its use in lamps, as a body ointment, and for hair. Cleopatra, according to historical accounts, used it specifically to brighten the whites of her eyes.


From Egypt the plant moved in every direction simultaneously. It traveled east into the Persian Empire, into India — where its documented use in lamps and medicine begins around 2000 BCE — and eventually into China during the Han Dynasty, where it was cultivated for its ricinoleic acid content. It traveled west into the Greek and Roman worlds, documented by Dioscorides in his De Materia Medica in the first century CE and by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia, both of whom noted its Egyptian origins and its medicinal uses. It reached Southern Africa, some evidence suggests, as far back as the Stone Age — making it one of the few plants to have traveled the full length and breadth of the African continent in prehistoric times.


Thomas Jefferson knew the plant by its medieval name, Palma Christi, and planted it at Monticello in 1811. By the twentieth century, castor oil was lubricating the rotary engines of World War I biplanes — its viscosity and stability under extreme temperatures making it uniquely suited for aircraft engines — and the industrial brand Castrol, founded in 1909, derived its name directly from castor oil, a connection that persists in the brand name to this day. One plant. Six thousand years of documented use. From Egyptian tombs to aircraft engines to an assassin's umbrella.


Sacred Legends: The Hand That Heals and the Hand That Harms

In Christian Europe, Ricinus communis acquired the name Palma Christi — the Palm of Christ — and this name requires understanding. It was not given lightly or decoratively. The plant's enormous leaves, deeply divided into seven to eleven spreading lobes, were understood as resembling the outstretched hand of Christ extended in healing — a hand offered to the sick, to the suffering, to those in need of something the ordinary world could not provide. In a pre-pharmaceutical world where the castor plant could move a blocked bowel, reduce an inflamed joint, heal an infected wound, and ease a difficult labor, the association with miraculous healing was not metaphorical. It was observational. The plant did things that seemed, to those who witnessed them, to exceed what any plant should be capable of.


Jefferson recorded it under this name. Medieval herbalists described it under this name. Travelers carried it under this name from the Mediterranean into northern Europe, where it could not survive the winters but was cultivated in gardens as a prized medicinal. The name Palma Christi is also, in the tradition of the Doctrine of Signatures, a dual acknowledgment: not only the healing hand, but the five-pointed shape of the leaf itself, echoing the five wounds of the Passion. The plant that heals was associated with the healing that comes through suffering — a resonance that deepened when people began to understand that the same seed that yielded the healing oil also contained one of the most lethal substances in the natural world.


In the Hebrew Bible, the Book of Jonah describes a plant — kikayon in the original Hebrew — that God caused to grow rapidly over the prophet to shade him from the desert sun, then caused to wither just as quickly to teach him a lesson about mercy. The kikayon has been translated across centuries as "gourd," but many scholars believe it was Ricinus communis — a plant that in warm climates can grow several meters in days, that provides extraordinary shade with its enormous leaves, and that Herodotus recorded under the Egyptian name kiki, a word strikingly similar to the Hebrew kikayon. If this identification is correct, then the castor plant appears in one of the oldest moral parables in human literature — a plant given by God to shelter a prophet, and taken away to reveal that mercy matters more than shade.

In ancient Greece, the plant was described as sacred to Zeus — the king of gods, the god of sky and thunder, the one whose authority over all things extended even into the garden. A plant of such extreme duality — healing and lethal, sacred and dangerous — would naturally be associated with the most powerful deity in the pantheon, the one whose gifts were also, always, double-edged.


In Hindu tradition, the castor plant carries sacred dimensions that run deeper than any single narrative. Black castor oil is used to anoint deities and sacred objects during religious ceremonies, symbolizing reverence and the presence of divine blessing. It is applied in rituals of manifestation while chanting specific mantras, understood as a substance that directs intention toward goals of health, prosperity, and spiritual advancement. Applied to the feet or forehead before sleep, it is believed to promote the restful consciousness that is essential for spiritual regeneration. In the Abhyanga practice of Ayurvedic self-massage, castor oil functions as a carrier of intention as much as a physical substance — the thick, warm oil applied to the body is not merely lubricating the skin but restoring the flow of prana, the vital life force, through channels that the demands of daily life have congested or blocked.


In traditional African medicine across multiple cultures, the castor plant was understood as a plant of power — one to be approached with knowledge and respect, not casually. The Bodo tribe of Assam used the leaves to feed the larvae of silk worms. Healers across the continent used the leaves as poultices, the oil as a purgative and wound treatment, the roots and bark for preparations whose precise formulations were held within lineages of healer-specialists, not shared broadly. This restriction of knowledge was not secrecy for its own sake — it was the recognition that a plant this powerful required a practitioner who understood both its gifts and its limits.


What the Ayurvedic Healers Knew

In Ayurveda, eranda — castor — is considered one of the great therapeutic plants, and the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita together describe it in a detail and depth that has few equivalents in the classical literature. Traditional Ayurvedic and Siddha medicine considers castor oil the king of medicinals for curing arthritic diseases — a claim that modern research is beginning to investigate with methodological rigor.


The Ayurvedic classification of eranda places it as predominantly tikta (bitter) and kashaya (astringent) in taste, ushna(hot) in potency — meaning it generates warmth in the tissues — and snigdha (oily, unctuous) in quality. This specific combination of properties made it uniquely suited to conditions involving vata imbalance — the dosha associated in Ayurveda with dryness, cold, irregular movement, and nervous system disturbance. Arthritis, constipation, nerve pain, and reproductive disorders — all understood in Ayurvedic terms as primarily vata conditions — were the classic indications for castor oil.


The internal use of castor oil in Ayurvedic medicine is highly systematic, with precise dosing protocols calibrated to the patient's constitution, the condition being treated, and the season. Eranda taila (castor oil) administered internally in small doses — not the large purgative doses that became familiar in Western medicine — was used as a virechanopaga, a substance that facilitates the downward movement of vata and removes accumulated toxins (ama) from the deep tissues without the violent purging associated with stronger virechana (purgative) herbs. It was given regularly to children to treat parasitic worm infections — an indication that was documented in traditional use across the Mediterranean, Africa, and South Asia and has since been confirmed in laboratory studies demonstrating castor oil's anthelmintic activity.


For arthritis in particular — amavata in Ayurvedic classification — castor oil occupied a central role that is not adequately captured by the word "treatment." It was part of a therapeutic philosophy that understood arthritic pain as the consequence of ama (unprocessed metabolic residue) accumulating in the joint spaces, carried there by disturbed vata moving through channels that cold and dryness had narrowed. Castor oil addressed this not just by lubricating the joint but by warming the channels, moving the accumulated residue, and restoring the free circulation of vata through the affected tissue. Applied topically as a warm pack over an inflamed joint, or consumed internally in the precisely calibrated doses described in the classical texts, castor oil was the primary intervention in a condition that the Charaka Samhita identified as among the most painful and most difficult to cure.


In Rasayana practice — Ayurveda's science of rejuvenation and life extension — castor oil appears as one of the oils recommended for abhyanga, the daily self-massage practice understood as a foundational longevity intervention. The warmth and penetrating quality of castor oil made it particularly valued for evening application, when the body's vatanaturally increases and the nervous system benefits from grounding. Applied to the soles of the feet before sleep, it was understood to calm the nervous system, anchor the restless movement of vata, and promote the deep sleep in which the body's repair processes most effectively operate.


What is extraordinary, in retrospect, is how systematically the ancient Ayurvedic applications of castor oil align with what modern biochemistry is discovering about ricinoleic acid — the fatty acid that makes castor oil unique. The warming, penetrating, channel-opening properties that Ayurvedic physicians described in terms of vata and ama are being confirmed in the language of prostaglandins, TRPV1 receptors, and lymphocyte activity. The healers and the scientists are observing the same phenomena in different languages.


The Chemistry: Ricinoleic Acid and Its Companions

The therapeutic — and toxic — power of Ricinus communis arises from a chemical profile that is unlike any other plant. The oil pressed from the seeds contains approximately 90 percent ricinoleic acid, a rare monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid found in no other common plant oil in significant concentrations. Ricinoleic acid is structurally unusual: it contains a hydroxyl group at the twelfth carbon of its chain, a modification that gives it its distinctive viscosity, its ability to penetrate skin more deeply than most fatty acids, and its range of biological activities.


The remaining 10 percent of castor oil comprises oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, and naturally occurring vitamin E (tocopherols), providing antioxidant protection and membrane-stabilizing activity.


The seeds themselves, however, contain something the oil does not: ricin. The protein ricin is confined to the seed's protein bodies — the same structures that also contain the oil — and remains in what is called the press cake after oil extraction. Cold-pressed castor oil, extracted at low temperatures without chemical processing, contains essentially no ricin, because ricin is a protein that does not mix with oil. The oil and the toxin occupy the same seed but in different compartments, and this chemical compartmentalization is what has allowed humanity to use the oil safely for six thousand years while the intact seed remained dangerous.


Ricin is one of the most toxic naturally occurring substances known to science. A quantity smaller than a grain of salt, injected or inhaled, is sufficient to kill an adult human by preventing cells from producing proteins — a mechanism of action so fundamental that it affects every organ simultaneously, leading to multiple organ failure within 36 to 72 hours. There is no antidote. The protein was first formally isolated and identified by Hermann Stillmark at the University of Dorpat in 1888. Its toxicity is estimated at approximately 380 times greater than that of the nerve agent VX.


The seeds also contain ricinine, an alkaloid, and Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA), a lectin that causes red blood cells to clump. The distinction between ricin and RCA matters: RCA does not penetrate the intestinal wall and its effects are therefore limited unless introduced directly into the bloodstream.


In other words, Ricinus communis contains within a single seed: a healing oil that is 90 percent one of the most therapeutically interesting fatty acids in nature, and a protein that is among the most lethal substances on earth. The plant is a pharmacopeia and an armory in the same shell.


The Duality That Cannot Be Separated

No honest account of Ricinus communis can avoid ricin, and this series has always been interested in the whole truth of the plants it examines. The castor plant was named poisonous plant of the year in Germany in 2018. The minimum lethal dose for a child is two seeds ingested whole. For an adult, eight to ten. The toxic properties of the intact bean have been known, by observation, since the plant was first used — ancient cultivators did not need a toxicology laboratory to know that something was happening when animals ate the seeds and died.


In 1978, Georgi Markov — a Bulgarian dissident journalist working for the BBC World Service in London — was assassinated on Waterloo Bridge when a modified umbrella was used to inject a tiny hollow sphere containing ricin directly into his leg. He developed a high fever and died in a London hospital four days later. It remains the only confirmed murder by ricin in history, and it transformed the plant from an object of botanical curiosity into a subject of security concern. The US Chemical Warfare Service investigated ricin as a potential weapon during World War I. Various domestic terror plots in the United States have involved attempts to extract or deploy ricin in the decades since Markov's death.


This history is not incidental to the story of castor oil. It is the other half of it. The plant that the medieval herbalists called the Palm of Christ is also the plant that killed Georgi Markov. The oil that Cleopatra used to brighten her eyes comes from the same seed as one of the most feared biological toxins in the world. This is not a contradiction to be resolved — it is a truth to be held. And it is a truth that traditional medicine always understood: the most powerful medicines come from the most powerful plants, and power of this magnitude requires knowledge, respect, and the discipline of the dose.

Mussolini's Blackshirts forced political opponents to ingest large amounts of castor oil — not to kill them, but to degrade and humiliate through violent purgation, causing severe diarrhea, dehydration, and the public loss of bodily control. The therapeutic oil of the Pharaohs became an instrument of political torture. The same substance. Different dose. Different intent. Different outcome.


Scientific Studies: Ricinoleic Acid and Inflammation

Modern research on castor oil's therapeutic properties has focused primarily on ricinoleic acid's anti-inflammatory mechanism, which operates through pathways that are beginning to be well understood.


Ricinoleic acid interacts with TRPV1 receptors — the vanilloid receptors that are also activated by capsaicin from chili peppers and that play a central role in pain transmission and the neurogenic component of inflammation. When ricinoleic acid binds to these receptors, it reduces their sensitivity, decreasing the transmission of pain signals to the brain. Unlike capsaicin, which first activates the receptor intensely before desensitizing it — producing the burning sensation familiar to anyone who has eaten a chili pepper — ricinoleic acid moves directly to the desensitization phase, providing anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects without the initial pain. A study published in Mediators of Inflammation confirmed that topical application of ricinoleic acid produces remarkable analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects in acute and subchronic models of inflammation.


Ricinoleic acid also activates intestinal and uterine smooth muscle cells via prostaglandin E2 receptors — the mechanism that explains both its laxative action and its traditional use as a labor-inducing agent. A 2011 study published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice found that castor oil packs applied abdominally were effective in relieving constipation in elderly patients, confirming a clinical application documented across millennia.


A study published in the Journal of Naturopathic Medicine found that patients using castor oil packs experienced improvements in lymphatic function, including reduced swelling and enhanced detoxification markers. The proposed mechanism involves ricinoleic acid's ability to stimulate lymphocyte activity when absorbed transdermally, enhancing the movement of lymph fluid through a system that has no pump of its own and depends entirely on movement, compression, and biochemical stimulation to function. The lymphatic system — responsible for removing metabolic waste, inflammatory byproducts, immune cells, and excess fluid from tissues — is increasingly understood as central to immune function, inflammatory regulation, and metabolic health, and castor oil packs are experiencing a scientific reexamination that is beginning to explain what traditional practitioners have observed for generations.


Preliminary research published in Nutrients in 2024 found that both castor oil and ricinoleic acid produced anxiolytic-like effects in animal models — reducing anxiety-like behavior in male mice — a finding that, if confirmed in human studies, would add a neurological dimension to the plant's therapeutic profile and resonate with the Ayurvedic use of castor oil applied to the feet before sleep to calm the nervous system and promote rest.


Scientific Studies: Arthritis and Joint Pain

The Ayurvedic designation of castor oil as the king of medicinals for arthritic diseases has attracted clinical investigation, and the results are among the most interesting in the botanical medicine literature.


Ricinoleic acid's anti-inflammatory activity at TRPV1 receptors is directly relevant to the inflammatory joint conditions — osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis, gout — that constitute the broad category of arthritic disease. When castor oil is applied topically over an inflamed joint, its penetrating fatty acid structure allows it to reach deeper tissues than most topical preparations, where it reduces the sensitivity of pain receptors, calms the local inflammatory cascade, and supports lymphatic drainage of the inflammatory byproducts that accumulate around chronically inflamed joints and maintain the cycle of pain and swelling.


In addition, castor oil's stimulation of lymphatic flow helps remove the excess uric acid crystals and other metabolic debris that precipitate gout attacks, and reduces the accumulation of inflammatory cytokines in joint spaces that drives the progressive tissue destruction of rheumatoid arthritis. These mechanisms do not cure inflammatory joint disease — no plant does — but they address its maintenance with a specificity that helps explain why traditional practitioners across multiple continents arrived at the same therapeutic recommendation independently.


Castor Oil in the Modern World

The industrial applications of castor oil are among the most varied of any plant-derived substance. Its unique chemistry — the hydroxyl group on ricinoleic acid that no other common plant oil possesses — makes it a preferred raw material for hydraulic fluids, high-performance lubricants, nylon-11 (a bioplastic used in automotive fuel lines and electrical cables), cosmetic emollients, pharmaceutical capsule coatings, biodiesel formulations, and the production of sebacic acid used in plasticizers and synthetic fibers. Over a million metric tons of castor beans are processed annually, primarily in India, China, and Brazil, which together produce the majority of the world's castor oil.


The world-famous lubricant brand Castrol — founded in 1909, named as a contraction of castor oil — was built on the plant's exceptional viscosity and thermal stability. The same properties that made castor oil ideal for the rotary engines of World War I aircraft made it the standard lubricant in many early racing car engines, and its industrial descendants continue to perform functions that synthetic lubricants have not entirely displaced.


In contemporary wellness culture, castor oil packs — wool flannel soaked in hexane-free castor oil, applied warm to the abdomen, liver, or joints and left for one to two hours — have experienced a significant revival, driven partly by traditional knowledge and partly by the emerging research on lymphatic stimulation and anti-inflammatory transdermal absorption. This is a practice with documented historical roots: the warm castor oil poultice appears in Egyptian, Ayurvedic, and European herbal traditions as one of the oldest topical therapeutic applications in the world.


In Ayurvedic clinical practice, castor oil remains one of the most frequently used therapeutic oils, administered internally for vata conditions, applied topically for joint pain and skin disorders, and incorporated into the daily self-care practices of abhyanga and padabhyanga (foot massage). Its use as a hair oil — massaged into the scalp to stimulate circulation, nourish follicles, and promote growth — is one of the most universal of its traditional applications, practiced in India, the Caribbean, West Africa, and across the African diaspora in the Americas.


A Caution Written in the Seed

No article on Ricinus communis can responsibly end without stating clearly what the plant makes unmistakably clear: the seed must never be eaten. The intact castor bean, in any quantity, is acutely toxic. The castor meal remaining after oil extraction is toxic and must be detoxified before use as animal feed. These are not theoretical warnings — they are confirmed by a body of case reports extending from ancient times to the present day.


The oil, cold-pressed and properly processed, is safe for topical use and for internal use in the calibrated doses of traditional medicine. The difference between the safe oil and the lethal seed is not about the plant's intent — plants have no intent — but about chemistry, preparation, and knowledge. This is the lesson that the Palma Christi teaches most directly: the same source yields both the healing and the harm. The practitioner's task, in every tradition that has worked seriously with this plant, has been to know which is which, and why, and when.


The dose, the preparation, the context — these are not details surrounding the medicine. They are the medicine itself.


Conclusion

Ricinus communis is one of the few substances on earth that has been continuously valued by human beings across every major civilization for more than six thousand years — and continuously feared for just as long. From the Egyptian tombs of 4000 BCE to the Charaka Samhita, from the medieval herbalists who named it the Palm of Christ to the Ayurvedic physicians who made it the king of arthritic remedies, from the aircraft engines of 1914 to the lymphatic packs of the contemporary wellness clinic — this plant has refused to be simple, and has refused to be forgotten.


It is the plant that lit the lamps of the Pharaohs and killed Georgi Markov. The plant that Thomas Jefferson grew at Monticello and that Mussolini's Blackshirts used as a weapon of humiliation. The plant that a Hindu devotee anoints on a deity's feet in the morning and that the Ayurvedic physician prescribes for an arthritic elder in the afternoon and that a contemporary wellness practitioner places warm over a patient's liver in the evening. It is the plant that contains, in the same seed, one of the most therapeutic fatty acids in nature and one of the most lethal proteins in the world.


No other plant in this series asks more of those who work with it. No other plant rewards that attention more completely. The ancient practitioners who developed the knowledge of how to use Ricinus communis safely — how to press its oil without contaminating it with its toxin, how to dose it precisely, how to apply it topically to achieve systemic effects — were engaged in one of the most sophisticated exercises in empirical pharmacology that human history records.


Whether it is called eranda in the texts of the Charaka Samhita, kiki in the papyrus of Ebers, Palma Christi in the gardens of medieval Europe, higuerilla in the Caribbean, or amanakku in the markets of Tamil Nadu, it is the same ancient plant — offering the same double-handed gift it always has: the healing and the harm, held in the same palm, asking only that you know the difference.
